4th Grade Math Tutoring

Online 4th Grade Math Tutor — Long Division, Fractions, and Decimals

Your 4th grader opens the math homework, sees long division, and the night goes sideways. It's one of the hardest jumps in elementary school — and it's hard to explain at the kitchen table after a full workday. Our 1-on-1 math tutors find exactly where your child is stuck and clear the path forward — step by step, at their pace.

What Your Child Learns in 4th Grade Math

4th grade math is a major step up. New topics build on each other fast. Here's exactly what our tutors cover — aligned to your child's school curriculum.

Long Division

Step-by-step practice with 1-digit and 2-digit divisors. We make sure your child knows what to do at every stage — and why.

Fraction Operations

Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. Understanding equivalent fractions and why 1/2 equals 2/4.

Decimals

Reading, writing, and comparing decimals in the tenths and hundredths places. Connecting decimals to fractions students already know.

Multi-Digit Multiplication

The standard algorithm and partial products method. Applying multiplication to real-world problems that show up on tests.

Geometry & Angles

Measuring and drawing angles, identifying types of lines and shapes. Connecting geometry vocabulary to what they see in problems.

📄

Word Problems

Multi-step problems that combine multiplication, division, fractions, and decimals. The skill most parents say is the hardest to help with at home.

Common Struggles

Where 4th Graders Hit a Wall in Math

These are the spots where 4th grade math gets hard — and where our tutors do their best work. If any of these sound familiar, that's where we start.

😔

Long Division Confusion

So many steps — divide, multiply, subtract, bring down, repeat. Missing one step causes a chain reaction of wrong answers, and the homework gets abandoned.

😕

Equivalent Fractions

Why is 1/2 the same as 2/4? It seems backwards to a lot of kids. Visual understanding matters here, and worksheets alone rarely build it.

😠

Decimal Place Value

Understanding that 0.30 equals 0.3 — and that 0.3 is larger than 0.09 — trips up many 4th graders. Tenths and hundredths feel abstract without the right context.

😟

Multi-Step Word Problems

Reading, setting up, and solving a problem with two or three operations is difficult when any one skill feels shaky. Most kids get lost at the setup stage.

The problem isn't your child. It's that no one has explained it the right way yet.

How It Works

Three Steps to a Clearer Math Night

Getting started is simple. We handle the matching, the planning, and the tutoring. You handle dinner.

🔍
Step 01

Free Assessment

We find the exact skills your child has — and hasn't — mastered. Not just the grade level. The specific concept. So we don't waste a session on things they already know.

👥
Step 02

Matched with a Tutor

Your child gets one tutor — not a rotation. One consistent relationship, one person who knows where they left off and what to work on next.

📚
Step 03

Weekly 1-on-1 Sessions

45-minute sessions aligned to what's happening in school right now. Your child asks every question they'd never ask in class. The tutor explains until it makes sense.

FAQ

Questions About 4th Grade Math Tutoring

Everything parents ask before getting started — answered honestly.

What 4th grade math topics do your tutors cover?
Our tutors cover the full 4th grade math curriculum: long division with 1-digit and 2-digit divisors, fraction operations with like denominators, decimals to the hundredths place, multi-digit multiplication, geometry basics including angles and lines, and multi-step word problems. Sessions are aligned to your child's school curriculum so nothing feels out of place.
How do online tutoring sessions work for a 4th grader?
Sessions happen live over video — your child and their tutor can see and hear each other, share screens, and work through problems together in real time. It feels like sitting side by side at a table, just from home. Most 4th graders settle in after the first session and look forward to their weekly time.
How long is each tutoring session?
Sessions are 45 minutes. That's long enough to cover real ground on a topic — for example, working through the full long division process with plenty of practice — but short enough to keep a 4th grader genuinely focused from start to finish.
How much does 4th grade math tutoring cost?
Plans start at $149/month. The full range of plan options is listed on our pricing page. The free assessment is included at no cost — no payment needed to get started.
Is it always 1-on-1, or do you do group sessions?
Always 1-on-1. Every session is your child and their tutor — no groups, no waiting your turn to ask a question. This is one of the most important things we get right. A 4th grader who's confused about fractions needs to be able to stop and ask "wait, why?" as many times as they need to.
Will the tutor follow my child's current school curriculum?
Yes. Our tutors work from what your child is covering in class right now — the same methods their teacher uses, the same vocabulary, the same problem types that appear on upcoming tests. We ask about the current unit at the start of every plan so sessions are always relevant.
What does the free assessment involve?
The free assessment is a short diagnostic session — about 20 to 30 minutes — where we work through targeted questions with your child to pinpoint which 4th grade math skills are solid and which have gaps. You'll get a clear picture of what to work on and why, before committing to anything.
How do I find out what math gaps my child actually has?
That's exactly what the free assessment is for. It looks beyond the grade level at the specific skills — does your child understand equivalent fractions? Can they set up a long division problem independently? Do they know when to use multiplication vs. division in a word problem? We find the real gaps, not just the grade level.
How quickly can we get started after the assessment?
Usually within a few days. After your assessment, we match your child with a tutor based on their specific needs and your scheduling preferences, then set up the first session. Most families have their first tutoring session within the same week as the assessment.
My child is specifically stuck on long division. Can you focus on that?
Absolutely. Long division is the most common 4th grade math struggle we see, and our tutors are very good at breaking it down into small, manageable steps. We isolate exactly which part of the process is causing confusion — the subtraction step, the "bring down" step, or the estimation of the quotient — and work from there.
My 4th grader is struggling with fractions. Is that a big focus?
Yes — fractions are a major focus area in 4th grade because they're foundational for everything that comes after: decimals, ratios, algebra. Our tutors use visual models, number lines, and real-world examples to build real understanding of what fractions mean, not just how to follow steps.
Do you cover decimals and place value in your 4th grade sessions?
Yes. We cover the full 4th grade decimal curriculum — reading and writing decimals, understanding tenths vs. hundredths, comparing decimal values, and connecting decimals to the fraction concepts students already know. Many kids find decimals easier once they see how they connect to fractions.
Do you give my child homework between sessions?
We may suggest a small amount of targeted practice between sessions — a few problems to reinforce what was covered — but we keep it light. Our goal is to reduce your child's math stress, not add to it. There's no required homework, and your child already has plenty coming from school.
What if my child doesn't connect with their tutor?
Just let us know and we'll find a better match. The relationship between a student and tutor matters. If the connection isn't there, the learning suffers — and that's not something we're willing to leave alone. We want your child to look forward to their sessions, not dread them.
Do you work with kids who have ADHD or learning differences?
Yes. Our tutors are experienced working with students who have attention and learning differences. The 1-on-1 format is often a better fit than classroom or group learning because the pace and teaching style can adapt completely to your child — there's no other student to keep up with or fall behind.
What equipment or software does my child need?
A laptop or tablet with a camera and microphone, and a stable internet connection. That's it. We use a straightforward video platform — nothing to download or install. Most families are up and running within minutes of joining the first session.
Can I sit in on a tutoring session?
Yes, and many parents do — especially for the first session or two. It's a great way to see the tutor's approach and understand how your child responds to it. Once families feel comfortable, most kids do better with a little space to work independently, but that's entirely up to you.
Is there a contract? Can we cancel anytime?
There's no long-term contract. You can pause or cancel your plan at any time. We'd rather earn your continued enrollment every month than lock you into something that isn't working.
What grade levels does Camp Homework tutor?
We tutor K–12 — every grade, every subject. If your child has needs beyond 4th grade math, we can cover reading, writing, science, and more. Visit our
elementary school tutoring
page for an overview of everything we offer at this grade level.
My child is ahead in math. Can you offer enrichment or more challenging work?
Yes. If your 4th grader has already mastered the standard curriculum, we can move into challenging multi-step problem solving, geometry, and early 5th grade concepts like fraction multiplication or order of operations. The free assessment helps us find the right starting point whether your child needs support, enrichment, or both.
