Online 3rd Grade Math Tutor β€” Multiplication, Fractions, and More

Homework used to take 20 minutes. Now it's taking an hour β€” and there are tears before it's done. Third grade is when math gets serious. Multiplication tables. Fractions. Multi-step word problems. Your child isn't behind because something is wrong with them. They just haven't had someone explain it the right way yet.

The 3rd Grade Curriculum

What 3rd Grade Students Are Learning in Math This Year

Third grade math covers more ground than most parents expect. Here's what your child is working on β€” and why some of it is harder than it looks. Every session at Camp Homework aligns to your child's school curriculum so there's no disconnect between what they learn with us and what they're doing in class. Explore our full math tutoring options or see what's covered in 3rd grade tutoring across all subjects.

πŸ”’

Multiplication Facts (2–10)

Times tables are the backbone of 3rd grade math. Your child works on fluency β€” knowing 7 Γ— 8 instantly, not counting up by 7s.

βž—

Division Intro

Sharing equally, understanding fact families, and connecting division to the multiplication they already know.

πŸ•

Fractions

Unit fractions, comparing fractions, and understanding why 1/4 is actually smaller than 1/2 β€” even though 4 is a bigger number.

πŸ”’

Place Value to 10,000

Reading, writing, and comparing numbers up to four digits. Understanding what the position of a digit actually means.

β–’

Area & Perimeter

Measuring and calculating the space inside shapes and the distance around them β€” often the first real-world math 3rd graders encounter.

πŸ“š

Multi-Step Word Problems

Reading a problem carefully, pulling out the numbers that matter, and solving it in the right order. A math skill and a reading skill at the same time.

Word problems draw on both math and reading comprehension. If your child is losing points there, it's worth pairing 3rd grade math support with
reading tutoring for 3rd graders
β€” the two skills reinforce each other.
Common Roadblocks

Where 3rd Grade Students Typically Struggle With Math

These are the exact spots where 3rd graders hit a wall. If any of these sound familiar, you're not alone β€” and a 1-on-1 tutor knows exactly how to help.

πŸ“Š

Multiplication Table Freeze

They can count by 3s slowly. But on a test, when the clock is ticking, the tables just won't come fast enough. Fluency takes the right kind of practice β€” not just more drilling.

πŸ•

Fractions Feel Backwards

"Why is 1/4 smaller if 4 is bigger?" This is one of the most common fraction confusions in 3rd grade β€” and it's a real conceptual shift that needs to be explained the right way.

πŸ“š

Multi-Step Word Problems

They can do the math when it's written as a number sentence. But reading a word problem, figuring out what to do, and doing it in the right order? That's three skills at once.

✏

Carrying in Multiplication

Once multiplication goes beyond single digits, keeping track of the "carried" number gets messy fast. A small mix-up at the start means a wrong answer every time.

The problem isn't your child. It's that no one has explained it the right way yet.

"Before Camp Homework, multiplication homework could take over an hour and always ended with crying. Now my son sits down, works through it, and moves on. Having the same tutor every week made a huge difference β€” she already knows exactly where he gets tripped up."

"Fractions were a complete mystery to my daughter. The way I learned them isn't how they're taught now, so I couldn't explain it. Her tutor figured out exactly the right way to explain comparing fractions so it actually clicked. It was so simple once it was shown to her correctly."

FAQ

Your Questions About 3rd Grade Math Tutoring, Answered

Twenty questions parents ask us most often. If yours isn't here, call us at (844) 818-1772.

What math topics does a 3rd grade tutor actually cover?
Our sessions focus on whatever your child is working on in school. That typically includes multiplication facts (2–10), division intro, fractions (unit fractions and comparing), place value up to 10,000, area and perimeter, telling time, and multi-step word problems. We follow your child's classroom curriculum β€” not a generic lesson plan.
How do I know if my 3rd grader actually needs a math tutor?
A few clear signs: homework is taking much longer than it should, your child gets upset or shuts down when math comes out of the backpack, or test scores aren't matching the effort they're putting in. If any of those feel familiar, a free assessment can pinpoint exactly where the gap is.
My child says they're just "bad at math." Is that really true?
Almost never. "Bad at math" usually means one concept didn't click β€” and everything built on top of it got harder as a result. In 3rd grade, that's almost always multiplication tables or fractions. When a tutor finds and fills that exact gap, the "I can't do this" feeling tends to lift.
Will the tutor follow what my child's teacher is doing in class?
Yes. We align every session to your child's school curriculum. Your child can bring their actual homework, class notes, or upcoming test topics. The tutor is there to support what the classroom teacher is teaching β€” not replace it with something different.
How long are tutoring sessions?
Sessions are 50 minutes, 1-on-1. That's long enough to make real progress but short enough to keep a 3rd grader focused and engaged from start to finish.
How many sessions per week do you recommend for a 3rd grader?
Most 3rd graders start with one session per week. If there's a bigger gap to close or a big test coming up, a second weekly session can help. We'll talk through what makes sense after the free assessment.
How does the free assessment work?
We schedule a 30-minute session with your child at no charge. A tutor works through a set of grade-level problems with them and identifies exactly where things are breaking down. After the session, we share what we found and how we'd approach it β€” then you decide if you'd like to continue.
What if my child gets stuck on a problem between sessions?
Reach out to us directly. Depending on your plan, your tutor may be available to help with a quick question between sessions. We want the learning to continue, not stall until next week.
My child is struggling with multiplication tables. Can the tutor actually help them learn these?
Yes β€” and memorization isn't the only approach. Some kids learn tables better through number patterns (multiples of 9 have a great trick). Others do better with visual arrays or spaced repetition spread across several sessions. Your tutor will find what works for your child specifically β€” not a one-size approach.
My child understands fractions in class but keeps getting them wrong on tests. What's happening?
This is more common than you'd think. Often the issue isn't fractions themselves β€” it's how fraction concepts are applied to word problems, or how test questions are worded differently than how they were taught. A tutor can work through the exact types of questions that are tripping your child up.
What if my child is already ahead of their class in math?
We work with that too. Some families use tutoring to enrich rather than catch up β€” extending into multiplication fluency beyond the basics, early fraction operations, or logic and multi-step problem solving. We build sessions around whatever level makes sense for your child.
Do you cover word problems? That's where my child always loses points.
Yes. Word problems are a core part of 3rd grade math and one of the biggest sources of lost points. Tutors help students slow down, figure out what the problem is actually asking, and break it into clear steps. It's both a math skill and a reading comprehension skill β€” and we work on both. For extra reading support, check out our
3rd grade reading tutoring
page.
Can we schedule sessions around after-school activities?
Yes. Sessions are fully online and available on evenings and weekends. Most families build sessions around their existing schedule without any disruption to sports, music, or other activities.
Does my child always work with the same tutor?
Yes. Every plan is 1-on-1 with the same dedicated tutor, every session. Consistency matters β€” your child won't need to re-explain themselves at the start of each meeting, and the tutor builds a real picture of how your child thinks through math over time.
What if my child and their tutor aren't a good match?
Let us know and we'll make it right. We want your child to feel comfortable and actually look forward to sessions. A mismatch is something we take seriously and fix quickly β€” just reach out.
What does a typical 3rd grade math session actually look like?
Your child logs in, and the tutor starts with a quick check-in on anything new from class. They usually work on current homework or a concept that came up recently. The tutor explains, your child tries it, and they adjust together until it clicks. It's collaborative β€” not lecture-style. Your child does the work; the tutor guides the thinking.
How is online tutoring different from having someone come to our house?
The 1-on-1 attention is exactly the same. Online removes the commute, keeps sessions consistent rain or shine, and lets your child work in a familiar, comfortable space. Most kids warm up to it quickly β€” they're already comfortable on screens, and the format feels natural.
Starting at $149 per month β€” what does that include?
Starting at $149/month gets you 1-on-1 weekly sessions with a dedicated tutor. Each session is 50 minutes. We'll share full pricing options after the free assessment so you can choose what fits your family best.
Can I sit in on a session?
You're welcome to observe, especially at the start. Many parents check in briefly and then step away so their child can focus fully. Others prefer to stay for the whole session. We follow your lead β€” there's no wrong answer here.
Does Camp Homework help with grades beyond 3rd grade?
We cover K–12, all grades. If your child moves to 4th grade next year, we continue right where we left off. And if you have kids at multiple grade levels, each child gets their own tutor matched to their specific grade and subjects.
